Radiofrequency Ablation in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Return to your pain-free life with radiofrequency ablation treatment from Maasumi Headache & Spine Care.

Manage Your Chronic Pain with RFA Treatment

Age, poor posture, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, and obesity all contribute to the development of chronic pain across your body. These chronic pains can start interfering with your daily activities if not treated properly. This is where we can help.

At Maasumi Headache & Spine Care, we offer radiofrequency ablation in Rancho Santa Margarita, to assist you with all your pain management, providing the desired relief. RFA (radiofrequency ablation) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses high-frequency radio waves to send heat to the targeted nerves, destroying them, and thus preventing them from sending pain signals to the brain. So, you can get rid of all your chronic pain, especially in the arthritic joints, lower back, and neck.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with Radiofrequency Ablation?

What Conditions Can Be Treated with Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation is effective in treating:

  • Cancer pain
  • Tumors (to destroy cells)
  • Peripheral nerve pain
  • Chronic pain resulting from sacroiliac (SI) joint pain and spondylosis (arthritis of the spine)
  • Pain in your back, neck, and knee
  • Facial pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia

Who Is a Candidate for Radiofrequency Ablation?

The ideal candidates for radiofrequency ablation are those:

  • Having chronic pain that does not respond to pain medication and physical therapy.
  • Who have experienced pain relief after getting a nerve block injection.

However, you should not receive radiofrequency ablation if you:

  • Have a bleeding problem or an infection
  • Are pregnant

What Happens Before a Radiofrequency Ablation Procedure?

Before the procedure, we will:

  • Review your medical history and ask questions about your pain. If your current medications include blood thinners, we will ask you to stop taking them.
  • Perform a physical examination and X-rays or other imaging tests to see your anatomy, determine the severity of your injury, and rule out any underlying causes.
  • Perform a diagnostic block test to confirm the origin point and severity of your pain, and based on that your pain relief treatment regimen will be devised. This test involves injecting local anesthesia close to the pain site. If you don't find any relief after the injection, you may not be a candidate for RFA. If you experience significant relief, we will recommend RFA to ease your pain.
What Happens During a Radiofrequency Ablation Procedure?

What Happens During a Radiofrequency Ablation Procedure?

Our radiofrequency ablation procedure involves the following steps:

  • Preparation
We will ask you to lie on your stomach on an X-ray table and use monitors to observe during the procedure. If needed, we may give you sedatives to keep you relaxed during the procedure. Otherwise, we will just numb the treatment area with local anesthesia.
  • Needle Placement and Confirmation
Once your treatment skin is numb, we will insert a thin needle with the guidance of fluoroscopy (a type of X-ray) to ensure proper placement. After placing the needle at the ideal location, we will perform a test to once again confirm its proper placement. The test involves inserting microelectrode via the hollow needle. After that, we will ask you whether you could feel a muscle twitch, tingling sensation, or discomfort. If you feel so, the needle is positioned at the right spot.
  • Destroying the Pain-Causing Nerves
We will send radiofrequency waves through the needle to heat the targeted area, destroying the nerves in and around the area to stop them from sending pain signals to the brain. If needed, we can treat more than one nerve with RFA.

What Are the Advantages of Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation offers amazing benefits, including:

  • Completely stops or reduces pain
  • Delays or prevents surgery
  • Reduces the need for pain medications
  • Improves your functionality and ability
  • Short recovery time, so you can resume your routine activities within a day or two

How Effective Is Radiofrequency Ablation?

The effectiveness of the treatment varies from person to person. Though most people have some pain relief following the RFA treatment, how much relief they experience depends on the origin point of their pain and its root cause. While some people can have immediate pain relief, others may have to wait for 10 days to three weeks to get rid of pain.

The results of RFA treatment may last anywhere from six to 12 months and sometimes a few years. It is possible for the treated nerve to regrow, but only after 6-12 months following the treatment. In such circumstances, the treatment can be repeated.

To know how the treatment will work for you and its effectiveness and lasting duration, talk with our physician, Dr. KC Maasumi MD, MS. He will tell you everything about the procedure concerning its success rate and how long the pain relief will last based on the root cause, location, and severity of your pain.
