Spinal Cord Stimulation for Back Pain in RSM, Southern Orange County, CA

Effective and Minimally-Invasive Spinal Cord Stimulation Treatment Near You

If you are experiencing low back pain, neck pain, or persistent pain after your surgery, or any other form of chronic pain that hinders your ability to embrace life fully, it can be incredibly frustrating. When conventional treatments fail to provide relief, and your pain continues to impact your daily activities, a spinal cord stimulation could help.

At Maasumi Headache & Spine Care, we offer spinal cord stimulation, a groundbreaking medical device that revolutionized pain management, helping you with stubborn, long-term pain. Our spinal cord stimulation delivers electrical impulses to the specific regions of the spinal cord responsible for pain, effectively disrupting the transmission of pain signals to the brain. It provides pain relief by inhibiting the brain's ability to perceive pain in the stimulated areas.

Am I a Candidate for a Spinal Nerve Stimulator?

Am I a Candidate for a Spinal Cord Stimulator?

Spinal cord stimulation is suitable for those:

  • Who have had previous surgery with persistent pain
  • Having Nerve injuries caused by previous surgery or trauma
  • With peripheral vascular disease or angina (ischemic heart disease)
  • Experiencing complex regional pain syndromes (causalgia, neuropathic pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy)

Besides, spinal cord stimulation can help treat pain caused by:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Sciatica
  • Failed back surgery syndrome

What Types of Spinal Cord Stimulation Devices Are Available?

Spinal cord stimulator comes in three types, including:

  • Conventional Implantable Pulse Generator (IPG): A battery-operated spinal cord stimulator with low electrical output is recommended for people with pain in just one body part. The battery needs to be replaced once it runs out.
  • Rechargeable Implantable Pulse Generator: It comes with a rechargeable battery (meaning it can give more electrical output). It remains a good choice for people with pain in one or both legs or lower back.
  • Radiofrequency Stimulator: It works like a rechargeable IPG but uses a battery outside the body.

Benefits of Spinal Cord Stimulation

Spinal cord stimulation offers numerous benefits:

  • Better Alternative: It provides an effective solution to other treatment methods for unresponsive pain. When conventional approaches fail, spinal cord stimulation serves as a viable alternative.
  • Addresses Various Pain Thresholds: It addresses a wide range of pain conditions, including nerve pain, heart-related chest pain, and spine or back pain.
  • Reduces Reliance on Pain Medications: Chronic pain often necessitates the use of opioid-based painkillers, which come with various side effects and risks. By diminishing pain levels, spinal cord stimulation enables individuals to decrease their pain medication dosage, frequency, or both.
  • Allows for a Trial: Typically, spinal cord stimulation involves a trial phase, providing an opportunity to assess its effectiveness. If the trial proves unsuccessful, the procedure can be reversed without surgery. So, you can check how it works for your pain relief before committing to major surgery.
What to Expect During Spinal Nerve Stimulator?

What to Expect During Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Our spinal cord stimulation procedure has two steps, including:

  • Trial Procedure: It involves placing a temporary device. Once the treatment area is anesthetized, our surgeon will make one incision in your lower back. Utilizing fluoroscopy (a type of X-ray), our surgeon will carefully insert the electrodes into the epidural space of your spine. The battery will be positioned outside the body, usually on a belt you wear around your waist. For one week after placing the electrodes, you will assess the device's effectiveness in reducing pain. The trial is considered successful if you experience a 50% or more significant reduction in pain level. You will be recommended for a permanent implantation if a trial procedure is successful.
  • Permanent Implantation: It involves placing the generator beneath the skin and replacing the trial electrodes with sterile electrodes secured with sutures. After administering local anesthesia, our surgeon will make two incisions - one to hold the generator (usually along your lower abdomen or buttocks) and another along your spine to insert the permanent electrodes. Then, fluoroscopy is used to guide the placement of the electrodes. Our surgeon will close the incisions once the electrodes and generator are connected and functioning correctly.
